Apple iPhone

Singapore Telecommunications, aka SingTel, announced that it scored the iPhone distribution deal for four countries - Singapore, India, Australia, and Philippines. The Southeast Asia's largest phone company said Apple's handset will be offered through SingTel Mobile in Singapore, and it's partly-owned subsidiaries in Australia (Optus), India (Bharti Group), and the Philippines (Globe Telecom). No dates were given, though.

Now it's seems official - Apple's exclusive country deals are out. In Italy, TIM and Vodafone are carrying the iPhone, while Vodafone will be competing with SingTel's subsidiaries in Australia and India.

Lextex's CodeName iVy brings video surveillance to iPhone

Posted by Dusan on Monday, May 12th, 2008 at 2:52 am under iPhone

CodeName iVy

A company called Lextex is working on an application that lets controlling surveillance devices via iPhone. The so called CodeName iVy project provides users with complete remote access to what is happening, including easy time-shifting — all from any computer or iPhone using the web browser. Apparently, this is also working over EDGE, even though we're not eager to try it that way.

According to Lextex, traditional surveillance systems use a joystick or mouse to control camera positioning. With the iPhone, the user has the potential of a much more intuitive interface to drag the camera around and zoom in on things by pinching the picture. Sounds cool, but just wait to see how it looks in real life. Two video clips follow after the jump. Enjoy!

RemoteNote allows users to view and edit their iPhone notes from a web browser

RemoteNote

If you don't own a Mac, but always wanted to be able to manage your iPhone Notes from a PC, you obviously couldn't do it. Both MegaPhone (former iPhoneDrive) and iPhoneNotes are Mac only apps. That has just changed…

Thanks to the new native app called RemoteNote - all users, no matter which OS they're running on their desktop computer, can view and edit notes on their iPhone. The application relies on the WiFi hotspot and allows you to remotely connect to your iPhone and change notes from a web browser. All web browsers are supported — including Safari, IE, Firefox and Opera — but it is required, though, that you have Adobe Flash Player installed. In addition, your iPhone needs to be jailbroken as well as Jiggy Runtime installed. Both RemoteNote and Jiggy Runtime are available from Installer.app.

Apple's online store sold out of iPhones - No more online orders for iPhone

Posted by on Saturday, May 10th, 2008 at 5:26 pm under iPhone

The Apple iPhone is already sold out in the UK, following O2's iPhone price cut, and now the last reliable iPhone stock has run dry. Apple's own online store has stopped taking orders for iPhone 8Gb and iPhone 16GB handsets, indicating that Apple is gearing up to release their next-generation iPhone with 3G data connectivity.

Previously, the Apple online store showed delays of 5 to 7 days for all iPhone orders, but Apple has changed the status to "Currently Unavailable." The global shortfall of iPhone stock, paired with Apple's own shortage, indicates that the 3G iPhone is indeed due to launch soon.

Nokia's iPhone fighter gets codename - iPerformer?

Posted by on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 4:48 pm under iPhone

iPhone-fighter from Nokia called iPerformerWe sure hope not. Nokia's known for pushing out myriad handset offerings ranging from the super-cheap, low-end to the ridiculously high-end, and belittling a certain competitor's sales figures. But they're not known for their intriguing codenames. Case in point, we're hearing the Nokia is internally referring to their S60 Touch OS-based iPhone-fighting handset as the "iPerformer."

Right, regardless of the lame codename, there's also talk of the iPerformer hitting market with a widescreen touchscreen (of course), QWERTY keypad, GPS, NaviScroll, FM radio/ transmitter, WiFi, Bluetooth, TV out, and a Web cam. It's not clear what the "web cam" dealio is all about. Nokia usually knows what they're doing in the camera department so we'll just go along for now.

Launch window and pricing are still unknown, but we'll take whatever details on Nokia's iPhone-fighting iPerformer we can get at this point.

Sidenote: It's unclear if the Nokia iPerformer is the internal codename for the Nokia 5800 Tube, or the iPhone-killing touchscreen handset that's due to launch shortly after the Nokia Tube.

AT&T briefly announces free AT&T WiFi HotSpot service to Apple iPhone customers

Posted by on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 3:48 pm under iPhone

AT&T WiFi HotSpot iPhone portalRemember when AT&T launched their iPhone-specific AT&T HotSpot WiFi portal, only to remove the free service the next day? Right, well, it looks like the service has been officially rolled out (however briefly) for iPhone customers with legit, AT&T-locked iPhones - those with unlocked iPhones or non-iPhone plans on AT&T won't be getting the benefit of free access to AT&T WiFi HotSpots.

AT&T added a little tidbit to iPhone rate plan details, confirming that iPhone users can log into AT&T WiFi HotSpots for free:

To use iPhone, you'll need to sign up for a 2-year service agreement. Plans start at $59.99 and include Visual Voicemail, Unlimited Data (email and web), 200 SMS text messages and access to AT&T's more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks* all for use in the U.S.
*Wi-Fi available at U.S. company operated Starbucks locations equipped with a hotspot.

Unfortunately, the reference to AT&T WiFi HotSpot access was removed shortly afterwards, indicating that AT&T is still not ready to roll out the free WiFi HotSpot service to iPhone customers. We presume the delay in launching the service could be AT&T's ongoing conversion of Starbucks locations to AT&T WiFi HotSpot service.

There are apparently over 17,000 AT&T WiFi HotSpots across the US, and with AT&T rolling out their HotSpot service at all Starbucks and Barnes & Nobles locations, iPhone customers can look forward to speedy WiFi data connections around every corner. The service is a virtual lock for the near future, it's only a matter of time.

TiVoRemote allows you to control your TiVo from your iPhone/iPod Touch

TiVoRemote on iPhone

Want to control your TiVo from your iPhone or iPod Touch? Now you can do that thanks to the new application called (no surprise here) TiVoRemote. The application is compiled by TiVo Community Forum's member "Duckfin" and is still in the "quick and dirty" phase, hence user interface could use some polishing. After all, it should work on your beautiful phone/media player.

Installation is, as expected, quite simple. Simply add "http://tivoremote.googlecode.com/svn/www/repo.xml" to your Installer.app sources and click on TiVoRemote in the "Toys" category. Voila, you're ready to go. Or that's you're ready to stay in the couch even longer and let machines do the work for you. Next in line - Roomba remote for the iPhone. :)

Finally, in case you care to know more, there's Google Code page for the iPhone TiVo Remote app.

Orb goes iPhone

Orb goes iPhone

The folks behind Orb, the application/service that allows you to stream content from your PC to other devices, just announced the iPhone support. Now Apple handset's users are able to access all the content from their PC — including TV — to their shiny device. Naturally, iPod Touch is also supported but it is required, however, that both iPhone and/or iPod are jailbroken. And while we have nothing against that — on the contrary, we support iPhone being totally open — I'm curious to see how will Apple react to this. I guess Orb could argue this is just a temporary solution, until the new firmware with third-party apps becomes available. In the meantime, you can grab OrbLive from "Multimedia" menu in the Installer.app, or check out the short video demonstration of Orb in "iPhone action" after the jump.

Apple's iPhone OS 2.0 beta firmware shows push email capability - iPhone OS 2.0 getting .Mac push email support?

Posted by on Thursday, May 8th, 2008 at 2:59 pm under iPhone

Apple iPhone OS 2.0 to feature push email and fetch emailWhile BlackBerry users are busting out emails in real-time with the BlackBerry push email service, iPhone users are left to deal with a few third-party applications to enable push-email over their Outlook Exchange servers. Oh, and there's also Yahoo's iPhone push email support, but that service has been notoriously unreliable in dealing with real-time email delivery.

So, imagine our surprise on hearing that the next iPhone OS update - the iPhone OS 2.0 firmware - will launch packing native support for push email. AApple iPhone OS 2.0 to feature push email and fetch email new "Settings" pane under a new "Fetch New Data" category shows a toggle switch to enable push email. The screenshot below shows that push email is supported for .Mac.

It looks like Apple will not only be bringing true push email Apple iPhone OS 2.0 to feature push email and fetch emailsupport to the iPhone 2.0, but they are also going to start automatic email retrieval as "Fetch" email while referring to all real-time email as "Push" email.

We can't wait to get our hands on the final version of the iPhone OS 2.0. If push email turns out to be available through Apple Mail, Microsoft Exchange, and Yahoo alongside .Mac, the iPhone will be making a huge push into the enterprise market.

iPhone no longer available in the UK; 3G version coming soon?

Posted by Dusan on Thursday, May 8th, 2008 at 4:50 am under iPhone

iPhone no longer available in the UK

Ladies and gentlemen, he was a good buddy. Its large glossy screen made people around envy you (at least when you were in the hotspot area), and its media playing capabilities were second to none. However, he's not longer with British citizens…

iPhone, at least in its 2G version, is official dead in the UK. And even though we knew this is coming, O2 UK obviously wanted to make things clear, hence their iPhone page has a simple "iPhone no longer available" sentence. This in return prompts a question when will the 3G iPhone be released, and who will get the honor to carry it. Hopefully, we'll know sooner rather than later. June seems like a month to look forward to…

NBC makes full episodes of 30 Rock and The Office available to iPhone users

NBC makes full episodes of 30 Rock and The Office available to iPhone users

Like any other media company NBC is worried about their content being stolen. And while we keep arguing DRM is not the answer, but a simple annoyance to the end users - they keep pushing their awkward "story." However, this time even with some restrictions they seem to be doing the right thing. The media company is offering full episodes of 30 Rock and The Office to all iPhone and iPod Touch users. Best of all there are no ads — it's 100% free — making us think what's behind the curtain. Free ad-supported content is cool in my book, but this is simply weird. In addition, there's no DRM involved even though restrictions are made — whenever you exit Safari, you'll need to download the episodes again. Forget EDGE, this is the WiFi thing only and even then you better have more than a decent connection or at least enough time to spare.

Finally, we're not sure what's NBC's strategy. On one hand they are against Apple and on the other they come up with this. Guess Apple product users are not the problem, after all.

Apple iPhone headed to 16 Latin American countries on America Movil

Posted by on Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 at 5:51 pm under iPhone

America Movil bringing iPhone to latin americaApple sure is making a global blitz with its iconic Apple iPhone handset. With carriers signed up left and right to launch the iPhone in various markets across the globe, America Movil has secured a deal to bring the iPhone to Latin America later this year.

America Movil isn't saying how much the iPhone will cost or if it will even be an exclusive on the carriers network, but we do know that the iPhone will soon be coming to America Movil's 16 country footprint.

With Vodafone set to offer the iPhone to 10 different countries and America Movil apparently preparing to bring the iPhone to 16 countries, much of the world will soon be given a chance to experience the iPhone for themselves.

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) to offer Apple iPhone in Italy

Posted by on Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm under iPhone

Telecom italia Mobile TIM offering unlocked iPHoneItaly's going to have some competitive iPhone sales later this year. With Vodafone already on-board to bring the 3G iPhone to Italy as part of a 10-country iPhone launch, the juggernaut wireless provider is an iPhone-force to be reckoned with. But, that's not going to stop smaller Italian carrier Telecom Italia Movil (TIM) from giving it their best shot with an Italian iPhone offering of their very own.

TIM has announced that it "has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year."  There's no mention of whether TIM's Apple iPhone will be the current-generation iPhone or the next-generation iPhone capable of 3G network data speeds. Previous speculation has hinted at TIM launching the 3G iPhone without contract or network-lock. We can't wait to see if Apple will indeed let TIM launch an unlocked 3G iPhone alongside Vodafone's offering…

Apple iPhone SDK Beta 5 now available

Posted by Dusan on Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 at 1:28 am under iPhone

Apple iPhone SDK Beta 5 now available

The Beta 5 version of the iPhone SDK is now out. Unlike the previous release, this one doesn't bring much new to the table. However, tweaks to the developers tools and some bug fixes should be more than enough for any iPhone/iPod Touch developer out there to update.

This fifth beta release of the iPhone SDK includes a complete set of tools, compilers, frameworks, and documentation for creating iPhone OS applications. These tools include the Xcode IDE, and the Instruments analysis tool, among many others. With this software you can develop applications that run on iPhone and iPod touch using the included iPhone Simulator.

The download link remains the same.

More 3G iPhone photos emerge?

Posted by on Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 at 6:00 pm under iPhone

Our Tuesday wouldn't be complete without any 3G iPhone rumors/pics to show our readers. As June closes in on us, new 3G iPhone pictures have emerged from Chinese forum WeiPhone.com.

The iPhone, clad in white, in these pictures shows the redesigned speakers/dock connector, the extra sensor near the earpiece, the more tapered design, and the glossy plastic casing that was rumored to be in store for the next-generation iPhone - so this could be a legitimate preview of the 3G iPhone. On the other hand, Apple is notorious for circulating fake handsets to throw people like us off their trail.

3G iPhone in white caught on film

If this design turns out to be the real deal, the 3G iPhone looks like it'll be a mildly refreshed take on the current-generation iPhone. The lines are clean and glossy casing is attractive. Now, we just need some hands-on time with the 3G iPhone. The wait can't seem any longer at this point…
