Meizu M8 MiniOne to debut at CES? Apple’s lawyers rejoice!

CES is certainly the place to be. Yes, we’ll be sending our team there as well. And guess who’s also going to attend? Meizu - the folks behind the world’s most famous iPhone clone, MiniOne M8.
Now I could go on and on about the “right thing to do” and whether this is a “smart move” or not on behalf of Chinese manufacturer. But, Engadget has put it quite simply — it’s much better to keep this thing (MiniOne M8) as the China-only project. Yap, you’ll be more than safe with those Chinese “flexible” intellectual property laws. Otherwise, I can easily envision Jobs unleashing its lawyers to the Chinese “bozos.” We’ll see where this goes. It DOES sound fun.

I’ll comment as I love the topic of International IP and I love technology. I’m American and living and working in China so I’ve seen both sides of the story. Everyone is so quick to jump on the word “clone”. About ten years ago, Motorola had the first “clam shell” style flip phone on the market. Other flip phones followed such as the Qualcomm Q-Phone. Motorola sued. If you look at the market now, there are many flip phones that look alike now.
So if you look at the concept of having a dynamic user interface touch screen phone, which is the “unique” feature of the iPhone, can you really say the MiniOne is copying it or are they just using a form factor that will be a general standard a couple years from now.
China’s mobile phone market is much more developed than the US or EU. There are tons of local manufacturers who are making mobile phones with features never heard of in US and EU markets. The concept or form factor of a touch screen mobile phone has been out long before the iPhone hit the market. But what Chinese mfg has the legal muscle to take on Apple?
One last thought, many of phones from big name mfg don’t really fit the needs of the local market. I see many of what is commonly refered to as “cloned” phones in China having many more features that meet the needs of the Chinese users. For example, hand-writing input via touch screen is a big one because of the Chinese characters. Just an example. For the same clone phone, it is usually half the price with many more features for the local market.
